82 palestinians killed by israeli action this month
1 israelis killed by palestinian action this month
The Israeli war against Lebanon ends on August 14th when a UN brokered truce goes into effect.
More than 1200 lebanese have been killed during 34 days of war. Nonetheless Hezballah came out as the victorer as Israel failed to accomplish its stated objective of crushing Hezballah. Hezballah was able resist the Israeli invasion of southern Lebanon, and maintained its capability to launch rockets into northern Israel. Also its popularity skyrocketted during the invasion - even within sunni and christian lebanese sectors, as it was the only force to resist the Israeli agressor. On the other hand, one of the looesers was Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert, who failed to fullfill his stated military and political objectives. Two years from now he will have to leave office, ultimately caused by the Israeli defeat. Un reports that some 350.000 unexploded israeli bomblets are left behind in southern Lebanon. They will cause hundreds of lives among the lebanese civilian population in the years to come. Especially among lebanese children.
To prove its ability to conduct a two-front war, Israel steps up attacks on Gaza at the beginning of the month, killing more than 20 palestinians. At the end of the month it kills 30 more palestinians. A total of 82 Palestinians and 1 Israeli are killed during the month. The Israeli human rights group B’Tselem reports a “substantial increase” in the past 2 months of IDF soldiers beating, mistreating, humiliating Palestinians during encounters in the West Bank.
