42 palestinians killed by israeli action this month
6 israelis killed by palestinian action this month
Targetting palestinian security infrastructure. Reoccupying Oslo accord territories
Israel increasingly targets the palestinian security infrastructure. Bombs PSF and Force 17 buildings and posts, the PA
naval headquarter, and the military intelligence headquarter. The
strategy is to destroy all palestinian military and police resistance, before a future israeli invasion of Palestine.
Sharon announces plans to build another 708 housing units in the Jewish settlements of Ma'ale Adumim, Alfe Menashe. The
State Dept. criticizes the move as "provocative." Meanwhile the strong israeli lobbying effort is felt in Washington, as
Bush receives 2 letters signed by 87 Senators and 209 House mbrs. calling on him to reconsider US ties with the PLO.
On April 15th Israel further escalates the conflict by conducting a late-night air strike against a Syrian radar station
deep inside Lebanon, killing 3 Syrian soldiers, wounding 4. Israel holds Syria responsible for allowing the April 14th
Hizballah attack. The State Dept. urges all sides to "exercise maximum restraint" but refuses to condemn Israeli actions.
On April 17th the IDF sends tanks and bulldozers into Gaza to reoccupy a mile-wide strip of PA-controlled territory in
the northeastern corner of Gaza, marking the 1st reoccupation of territory ceded to Palestinian rule under the 1993 Oslo
accords. Secretary of State Powell publicly rebukes Israel for taking "excessive and disproportionate" action. Commenting on
Powell's statement on Israel's reoccupation of part of Gaza on 4/17, Sharon tells the French newspaper Le Figaro that he is
"tired of always hearing people say that Israel uses excessive force," adding that foreign criticism only "encourages Arafat
to start shooting at Israeli civilians again."
Palestinians increasingly respond to israeli killings and repression with mortar attacks; several carbombs and suicide bombs. Arafat orders the Popular Resistance Committees disbanded. This is rejected.
