41 palestinians killed by israeli action this month
29 israelis killed by palestinian action this month
Sharp increase in IDF assassinations, and suicide retaliations
In retaliation for Israels assassination of 8 Hamas member at the end of July, a Hamas suicide bomber on August 9th kills 16, injures at least 90. Immediately after the bombing, the IDF senior command, Israeli cabinet convene separately to discuss response scenarios. The cabinet agrees to a new strategy of hitting PA targets with the aim of forcing Arafat to choose between a "full cease-fire" or destruction of the PA. PSF posts are bombed, and many PLO offices are occupied, including Orient House (the symbolic PLO FMin.); Sharon declares that "Orient House will not open again. Ever." The State Dept. says the actions mark a "political escalation." Russia warns Israel has crossed a "dangerous line." In response, Israel removes the Israeli flag from Orient House. 4 days later, IDF sends tanks and bulldozers, escorted by helicopters, into Jinin to surround PA offices, demolish the local PSF headquarters and a PSF checkpoint; soldiers also occupy the local governor's office. The PSF, which evacuated the sites hrs. earlier, does not engage the IDF troops. This is the first sustained invasion of a major PA-controlled city. IDF is testing grounds for total reoccupation of the West Bank next spring.
IDF steps up its assassinations, eclipsing with the assassination of the PFLP leader, Mustafa Zibri in Ramallah on
august 27. The US criticizes Israel for "inflaming an already volatile situation and making it much harder to restore calm" says Israel must also take economic, security steps to alleviate pressure on the Palestinians. There's a deep difference however in the State Dept. analysis, and Bush statements. He regards the assassinations as "preventive action" against terrorists. Israel perceives Bush to be in command, not the State Dept. Israel undeterred continues its assassinations.
