Terror in Gaza

The IDF conducts a major 1-day incursion into Khan Yunis called Operation Long-Distance Vision to “destroy the terrorist infrastructure” near Neve Dekalim, ordering 100s of Palestinians to flee their homes and evacuate the area, firing missiles from helicopters (wounding at least 6 Palestinians and damaging a hospital), blowing up 2 vacant 5-story apartment buildings and 1 Palestinian home (wounding at least 10 Palestinians, rendering homeless at least 141). Citing security reasons, the IDF bars UNRWA head Peter Hansen from leaving Gaza through the Erez crossing; UNRWA condemns the incident as “unprecedented.” IDF terror continues through the month with assassinations, random killings, incursions, house demolitions, and land confiscations, culminating when IDF shells an UNWRA school on 9/30 killing 10 children. A total of 116 palestinians are killed by the israelis during the month.

In Jerusalem on 9/12, some 70,000 right-wing Israelis (many of them settler teenagers bussed in from the territories) demonstrate against Sharon’s disengagement plan. Settler terror against palestinians continue as well, but is now also targetting internationalists. In Hebron on 9/29, 5 Jewish settlers armed with heavy metal chains, rocks, sticks severely beat, rob 2 American women working with Christian Peacemaker Teams escorting Palestinian children to their school; 1 woman suffers a punctured lung, the other a broken arm and knee. Jewish settlers also set fire to 400 dunams of olive trees near Bayt Furik, damaging 100s of trees.

Some 3,000 Palestinian prisoners end an 18-day hunger strike on 9/2, achieving few of their goals; prisoners acknowledge that their strike was poorly timed, gained little international coverage, was slowly dissolving.
