Retreat from Gaza. IDF escalations and revealing Mofaz revenge policies
The IDF blows up its last posts and observation towers in Gaza, completes removal of its equipment in preparation for a handover to the PA; the only settler or IDF structures left standing are the IDF division headquarters nr. Neve Dekalim, which will be turned over to the PA, and the synagogues. Israel had agreed with the PA to remove the synagogues, but defense minister Mofaz refuses "as a religious person". Decides it will look better in the media if palestinians blow up the synagogues in Gaza. On 9/12 the IDF pulls its last troops out of Gaza, issues a declaration ending military rule in the Strip. One day after the IDF completes withdrawal from Gaza, Sharon, DM Mofaz separately vow that Israel will "make every effort to direct resources to the development" of West Bank settlement blocs -- in violation of international law.
Israel approves construction of 117 new housing units in Ariel settlement -- in violation of international law.
A 5-day summit on Israeli-Palestinian issues is held in Israel attended by 17 mainline Protestant and Jewish officials. The summit, organized by American Jewish groups, is aimed at convincing Americans to halt steps toward divestment following a move a yr. ago by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to consider divesting church funds fr. 6 corporations undertaking activities that support the Israeli occupation. The World Council of Churches issued similar recommendations to its mbrs. in 2/05, followed by the United Church of Christ in 7/05, raising serious concerns in Israel and among U.S. Jewish groups. Evangelical Christian groups were not invited to these mtgs., as they are already considered solidly supportive of Israel.
After low tensions during September, on 9/23 IDF breaks the cease-fire assassinating 3 members of Islamic Jihad. After the assassinations, Islamic Jihad fires at least 13 rockets at Sederot, the Negev in retaliation, causing no damage or injuries. Palestinian rocket attacks continue for 2 days, causing no injuries, and IDF steps up assassinations is retaliation. Hamas stops rocket attacks, but IDF states it will continue its offensive, assassinating 4 Islamic Jihad and AMB members a few days later. As a consequence the AMB Jenin faction says it will no longer observe the unilateral truce.
Independent reports that a new book by 2 prominent Israeli journalists, Ofer Shelah and Raviv Druker, states that "at a conference of officers as early as May 2001, Shaul Mofaz, now defense minister and then chief of staff, asked for the tape to be switched off before telling them that he wanted a 'price' exacted from the Palestinians of 10 killed a day on each of the army's seven fronts." The book also reports that after 6 IDF soldiers were killed in an ambush in 3/02, "Mofaz personally ordered a revenge operation in which for the first time Palestinian police officers would be shot, whether they posed a threat or not."

IDF soldiers were killed in an ambush in 3/02, "Mofaz personally ordered a
