14 palestinians killed by israeli action this month
1 israelis killed by palestinian action this month
IDF continues assassinations. Hamas wins palestinian parliamentary election. Sharons suffers stroke, replaced by Ehud Olmert
The AMB, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the PRCs confirm that their unilateral truce is over. IDF continues their assassinations and random killings, but at a lower level than in December. Palestinians respond with rockets.
IDF interferes in the palestinian election process, harassing or arresting candidates, and initially preventing them from campaigning in Jerusalem.
Sharon suffers a massive stroke on 1/4 slipping into coma, from which he does not recover. His position as PM is taken over by Ehud Olmert.
In the palestinian elections on 1/25, Hamas wins 74 seats, Fatah 45, and PFLP 3. Hamas says it will meet with Abbas, as head of Fatah, and the smaller parties in several days to discuss formation of a unity government. Fatah however has been the ruling power in Palestine for decades and doesn't want to participate in such a government.
