67 palestinians killed by israeli action this month
29 israelis killed by palestinian action this month
Right wing israelis and IDF tries to derail peace process. Palestinian militant groups annonce 3 mo. cease-fire
After some goodwill gestures towards palestinians, the Israeli Housing Ministry authorizes construction of 2,000 illegal Jewish settlement housing units to begin, says 10,000 units await approval. Kach activists set up new unauthorized settlement outposts in the West Bank. In Jerusalem, 20,000 Jewish settlers demonstrate on June 4th against the peace summit in Aqaba. Tourism Minister Benny Elon begins work to set up offices of the pro-transfer Moledet party in occupied palestinian homes in East Jerusalem. Likewise Hamas supporters demonstrate against the peace summit.
Strong forces within the IDF are opposed to the peace process, so on June 10th the IDF attempts to assassinate, but only wounds Hamas political leader and chief spokesman `Abd al-`Aziz Rantisi, firing missiles at his car as he drives through Shati` refugee camp in Gaza, killing a bodyguard and a Palestinian woman walking nearby. Abbas condemns the Rantisi attack as a “terrorist attack in the full meaning of the word,” saying it was aimed at sabotaging the road map; Hamas says it is a “declaration of war,” vows to “commit operations that will shake Israel.” The next day a Hamas suicide bomber kills 16 on a bus in Jerusalem. The next two days IDF assassinates and randomly kills 21 palestinians. Steps up incursions and assassinations.
In support of PA efforts, Fatah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad at the end of June formally announce cease-fires against all Israelis everywhere for a minimum of 3 months. The DFLP, PFLP say they will abide by the truce.
